The bandh which began at 6 am was total as shop, establishments and industrial units in Palghar taluka remained closed.
The entire taluka and Palghar city in particular turned into a fortress with over 1000 police personnels manning the deserted streets. Contigents of the Rapid Action Group, Riot Control Police, Quick Response Team were guarding the homes of Shaheen Dhada and Rinu Srinivasan, the girls who were arrested for their facebook comment. While Shaheen had commented on the Mumbai shutdown after the death of Sena supremo Bal Thackeray Rinu had liked and shared the comment.
Sena's Thane district president Prabhakar Raul demanded that the state government revoke the suspensions of the cops. He called for a strict law to check contents on social networking sites.
Heavy police bandobast was there outside the Dhada hospital which was vandalised by sainiks. The hospital wore a deserted look as patients stayed away.
Autos were off the road and people were seen walking to the destinations. The railway canteens at Palghar station were shut and manned by cops. The state transport buses plied with police security.
As Wednesday was a state government holiday for Guru Nanak Jayanti, most people remained indoors. Additional Supperintendent of Police, Thane Rural, Sangramsinh Nishandar said that there were no untoward incidents reported. Industrial units were open till 10.30 am but forced to shut down by angry sainiks.
