MUMBAI: The Byculla women's prisoners' authorities have tied up with an electricity agency to provide hot-water baths for ill prisoners who are advised by doctors to have only warm baths. The facility has been provided to inmates of the Byculla prison firstly and follows the installation of CCTVs and jammers to make prisons a safer place.

"Earlier, the women prisoners who would be ill were advised by doctors to have warm water baths. It was problematic for them as the water had to be boiled in the jail kitchen.

Now, a private firm has installed a solar electricity system in the campus which would be used to heat the water tank," said a jail officer. Bipin Kumar Singh, inspector general of prisons (south region), said that they have given this facility to 'patient prisoners only'. "We have doctors and as per their advice the facility is extended to those prisoners.

There are around 200 women lodged in the prison. Some of them are pregnant, many of them have children below six years of age and they require hot water. The facility, said an officer, has also been extended to the prisoners' children. "It's a good move," appreciated a police officer. Some pregnant woman prisoners are kept in the government hospitals for a few days for their delivery and are then sent back to the jail. "In such circumstances, a hot water for bath for the mother and the infant is essential. The new system has made things easier," the officer added.

Besides this, there are several patient prisoners who are advised to have warm baths. Earlier, in 2008, Malegaon bombing suspect Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur was suffering from several ailments. She would be provided hot water from the jail kitchen. Now, the jail authorities are making things easier that would help prisoners to maintain their health and wellness. "This is not only for patient prisoners. There are some prisoners who have a habit of having warm water baths. If proved medically, they will also be allowed to use this facility as per doctor's advice," said a source.
