MUMBAI: Unknown thieves decamped with Rs 5 lakh worth of valuables from a jewellery showroom in Saphale in Palghar by drilling a hole from the bathroom of an adjoining grocery shop in the wee hours of Monday.

The theft came to light when the owner entered the showroom on Monday morning. The thieves gained entry into the bathroom of the Sachin grocery shop and drilled a hole into Kamal Jewellers. Gold and silver ornaments displayed in the shop were robbed. While the closed circuit television has captured the theft that took place from 1.00am to 4.00am, the images of the thieves are not clear.

Police suspect it to be the job of an insider as the thieves were aware about the dysfunctional CCTV. The CCTV shows the thieves taking their own time to choose and steal valuables. The thieves did not even need to damage the CCTV. Interestingly, this is not the first time that the showroom has been looted. Considered one of the oldest shops in Satpati, the showroom registers a theft case once a year and no arrests have been made in the past cases.

A case under section 380 (theft) and 457 (trespass) of the IPC has been registered by the Satpati police.
