The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has been dumping the wastes generated from the region ever since its Solid Waste Management Plant in Utan, Bhayander (west) was shut down following protest by villagers in September 2009.
Since then wastes are being dumped on open plots in Mira Road and Bhayander. In Utan, the wastes that have reached several heights have been taken up for burning since February 23. Residents of Utan, Pali, Chowk, Dongri have complained of breathing difficulties due to the smoke. Add to it the stink that gets worse in the night hours. The municipality generates around 400 tonnes of waste daily.
The municipality had identified a plot for the dumping and recycling ground in Versova on the Ghodbunder Road in Thane district. The plot was rejected by the central government due to its proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The municipality has now identified another plot in Sakwar village of Virar (east) but the villagers there are against the setting up of a waste disposal plant.
The September 2009 protest had led to lathi charge by the police on villagers who had blocked garbage trucks from entering the dumping ground. Villagers recently met at the Dongri church where they decided to intensify their protest if the burning of garbage is not stopped.
