The owner Mayur Gala, a resident of Borivli, learnt about the theft on Tuesday morning when his workers reached the shop. The thieves broke open the five locks of the shutter and gained entry into the showroom. The theft is believed to have taken place in the wee hours.
The unidentified thieves hand-picked high end and expensive mobile phones. They even took away around Rs four lakh cash kept in the shop. The masked thieves damaged the CCTV installed in the showroom.
What the thieves were not aware off is that Gala had connected the CCTV images to his cellphone. So even as the thieves robbed the showroom, the images were transported to Gala's cellphone. Gala, however, had not seen the images till he learnt about the theft on Tuesday morning. The thieves destroyed the CCTV to wipe out evidence.
The Manickpur police has registered a case under sections 380 (theft) and 454 (trespass) of the IPC against the unidentified men. Gala has handed over the images to the police, who suspect it to be the job of an insider. The owner had kept all the mobile stock in the showroom to carry out an audit before the end of the financial year.
This is the second theft in the shop. In 2012, the showroom was robbed by unknown persons. No arrest has been made in the earlier case yet.
