SC relief for three Kerala cops in bogus rape case

MUMBAI: The SC last week set aside a complaint by a woman who had alleged that she was raped in a lodge in Dongri while in police custody. The apex court accepted a closure report by the crime branch of Mumbai police that the woman's complaint was bogus. The apex court has directed the woman to approach the lower court in Mumbai if she has any grievance.

This has come as a relief to three Kerala cops who had been suspended. TOI was the first to report the story.

Sources told TOI that soon after ACP Yashwant Watkar submitted the findings before the Supreme Court, the three Kerala policemen—sub-inspector P P Davis, assistant sub-inspector Girija Vallabhan and constable Sunita Hamsa—were reinstated. The three faced a probe by the crime branch for aiding and abetting the rape. The crime branch recorded statements of the accused policemen and the Kerala magistrate before whom she was produced for remand. The magistrate said the woman had not complained of rape and though she said she was not being allowed to talk to her family, evidence showed she had spoken 42 times to her mother and advocate. The report further stated that guests in adjoining rooms deposed that they had not heard any screams. A Kerala government hospital doctor, who examined the woman after arrest, said there were no injuries on her body.
