Alia Waraliya, the deceased, was trapped when the automatic door shut and the elevator started moving up. Police are probing whether Alia was blocking the door as she had been gesturing to her mother to enter after her. Alia lived with her parents and three siblings at Pathanwadi in Malad (East).
Her father is a businessman. She was to tie the knot next month, relatives said. On Sunday night, Alia was headed to meet a friend who stays in Al-Muzalfa society in Pathanwadi, to place an order for mehndi for her wedding. Al-Muzalfa is a 10-storey SRA building that came up in 2010.
Alia and her mother reached the building's ground floor around 8pm and called for the elevator. "Two other people were already inside the elevator. Alia was halfway in while her mother stood behind her. She was asking her mother to step into the elevator when the doors shut. The elevator started moving upwards with Alia's body stuck in the door. She crashed her head against the roof of the entrance to the elevator," said Jaychandra Kathe, senior inspector, Kurar police.
Alia's mother began to scream for help. The horrified occupants of the elevator also started punching buttons and trying to prise open the doors. Eventually, the building's watchman managed to bring Alia out from the first floor. The floor as well as the elevator was covered with blood, said residents. Alia was then rushed to a private hospital in Malad (East) where she was pronounced dead. The doctors informed the Kurar police.
"Alia suffered multiple injuries, fractures to her head, fractures to her collar bone besides injuries to the groin," said a forensic expert who conducted the autopsy.
The police are investigating whether there had been negligence on anyone's part. As of now, only a case of accidental death has been registered. "We suspect the sensors in the elevator may have malfunctioned. But a conclusion can only be arrived at after a lift engineer examines it and submits his report. Based on the findings, we will decide the course of action to take," said Kathe. The society's management as well as the firm in charge of maintenance of the elevator will be questioned. "We are checking when was the last time that the elevator was serviced," said an official.
Bombay Lift Act, 1939, specifies that the public works department (PWD) must inspect elevators twice a year. The department, though, has a severe manpower crunch.
Residents of Al-Muzalfa society were in shock when TOI met some of them on Monday. "We were returning from the mosque after offering prayers when we learnt about Alia getting trapped in the lift. The building was teeming with crowds of locals till late in the night. Never before has such an incident been reported in our neighbourhood," said a resident. Additional police personnel were deployed in the area on Monday night.
