Congress legislator Anant Gadgil during question hour said the issue of several cases in the recent past of people getting stuck inside lifts. Patil replying to supplementaries said of the 35,683 lifts in Mumbai, 32,493 had been inspected by the Public Works Department till Februay this year.
"Of the 32 posts for lift inspectors, 12 are vacant,'' said Patil adding that every three months the department puts up a chart of the number of lifts that have been inspected. Patil said in most cases the incidents of lifts getting stuck were on account of power failure.
He said it was binding on lift manufacturers to ensure that there is a battery back up in every lift so that in case of a power failure, it is able to reach the nearest floor for people to get out. The 2012 rules also make it mandatory for a beep signal if the lift has excess weight.
