MUMBAI: A corporate house has partnered with the Helen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Deaf-Blind (HKIDB) to provide hearing and visually impaired children and young adults with accommodation, rehabilitation and vocational training.

The Surti Skill Development & Rehabilitation Centre has come up on the outskirts of Mumbai in Karjat.

Morgan Stanley in India has supported HKIDB since two years. As single largest donor, it funded 45% of the construction of the Karjat home whose dormitory and lecture hall will be named after the firm. The donation was mainly raised from employees through annual charity walkathons in Mumbai.

Aisha De Sequeira, co-country head for Morgan Stanley said the vocational training programme in Karjat shall include poultry and sheep breeding, vegetable cultivation and horticulture.

HKIDB will have an arrangement with the government of Maharashtra for screening and identifying people with disabilities for training under the Maharashtra State Rural Livelihood Mission (MSRLM). The Karjat home will provide accommodation for orphan students during the three months of summer holidays when the HKIDB school in Navi Mumbai is closed.
