BJP aims for 1cr members in state, eyes Cong-NCP turf

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra BJP has geared up its organisational machinery to swell its ranks in the state's rural heartland, especially in Congress and NCP bastions. The party, which has a fragile alliance with the Shiv Sena, is in the last phase of its one-crore membership drive in the state where it plans to go solo in the next assembly election, sources said on Friday.

State BJP president Raosaheb Danve discussed details of the membership drive with party functionaries in Mumbai on Thursday. "The membership drive is in the final stages. We are making our way into new socio-economic groups," said party functionary Sanjay Upadhyay.

Party MLAs in 122 assembly constituencies have been assigned the task of fulfilling the membership target in the next 10 days and leaders have been asked concentrate on Congress-NCP bastions in the state while enrolling members. "We have so far enrolled nearly 70 lakh members across the state," said Upadhyay. The drive may be concluded in the first week of April.

"The BJP high command's twin strategy is to expand the party's electoral base and prepare for absolute majority in the next assembly elections so that we don't have to depend on allies," said a key Maharashtra BJP functionary on Friday.

BJP national president Amit Shah wants to re-package the party as one with a wide social base, sources said. "The BJP will have to shed its urban, upper-crust image. For instance, in Mumbai we are often seen as a party of traders and the mercantile class. Also, we need to maintain the caste balance. This is possible only if we make rapid inroads into villages and talukas and prepare a new generation of workers," said a party MLA.

The BJP's emphasis on social engineering prompted its leadership to nominate Amar Sable, a Dalit leader, to the Rajya Sabha recently, setting aside the claim of Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, a senior strategist and writer with close links to the Sangh Parivar. At the state level, it chose Chandrakant Patil and Raosaheb Danve to bring a rural touch.
