Some people stood and stared at the kite which darted glances back at them. As the onlookers stood watching helplessly, standing towards the edge of the bridge, away from the "menacing" bird, it was a young lad, all of 10 years, who sensed the need of the mute creature.
The boy, Akash Yadav, hotfooted to fetch some water in a plastic cup, and then gingerly walked towards the seemingly fatigued bird.
As the child carefully approached the bird with the water, the pleased-looking kite hopped slowly towards the little boy before gratefully dunking its beak into the cup. As if on cue, the bystanders broke into a round of soft applause, some of them capturing the act of kindness on their cellphones.
Animal activist Sunish Subramanian, who is from the Plants & Animals Welfare Society, said it is advisable to keep water bowls in housing societies and balconies for such thirsty birds, especially during the summer.
Little Akash, when asked if he did not fear the big bird, the boy, who lives in a slum rehabilitation building in Kanjurmarg east and studies at a primary school, simply shrugged. Then, his face melting into a boyish smile, he said: "I love birds and animals. Today, I just did what I felt I should."
