Most MDR TB patients in Mumbai are under 35: Study

MUMBAI: A medical study conducted in Mumbai and its satellite towns of Navi Mumbai and Thane showed that youngsters formed the bulk of patients suffering from multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB). This finding is extremely worrisome because youngsters have, given their mobility and work schedules, a greater potential of spreading the infectious disease within the community.

Tuberculosis kills two Indians every three minutes. Every TB patient can infect 15 others within a year unless given the right medication.

The emergence of TB strains that are resistant to known medicines has emerged as one of the biggest public health challenges in recent times. Now, a study done by Dr Alpa Dalal, who is attached to Mumbai's biggest TB hospital run by the municipal corporation, shows that 32% of the 340 MDR TB patients followed between 2005 and 2013 were in the 16-25 age group. Another 28% were in the 26-35 age group and another 30.6% in the 36-plus age group. "Almost 60% of them are in the productive age group," said Dr Dalal, who study aimed at establishing drug resistance patterns among Mumbaikars. Her study also showed that most of these patients were not rightly diagnosed and given inappropriate medications, further fuelling the spread of drug-resistant organisms in the community.
