MUMBAI: Since 22 years, an organisation dedicated to publishing books about Mahatma Gandhi has been offering heavy discounts on his death anniversary. This year too, the Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal suffered losses to the tune of Rs 2.5 lakh each day. Yet, its members went about their task with missionary zeal, patiently explaining the significance of each title to buyers and making expert recommendations as well.
Hundreds of readers who visited Sarvodaya's exhibition of books on Gandhiji recently were astounded to see volumes being sold for as little as three rupees. The week-long rebate surrounding Bapu's 67th death anniversary sold 7,400 books worth Rs 3.7 lakh.
The mandal had put up stalls in Flora Fountain and Nana Chowk from January 27 to February 2. Bapu's autobiography 'The Story of my Experiments with Truth' was available at an incredible Rs 30 and sold 900 copies. It normally sells for Rs 60-125. The five-volume 'Selected Works of Mahatma Gandhi' at a mere Rs 75 found 165 buyers. The cover price is Rs 150 and the following batch will be marked up at Rs 500.
Buyers came from all parts of Mumbai and wished that similar stalls had been set up in the suburbs as well. Students from other towns and villages who appear for the Gandhi exam at Wardha arrived to buy syllabus books.
Madrassa teacher Maulana Ashraf Shaikh arrived to browse titles in Urdu for the 70 children in his school in Santa Cruz. ""I have purchased 'Gandhi Baba ki Kahani' by Qudsia Begum Zaidi for a mere Rs 10, 'Gandhi aur Bachche' by P D Tandon for Rs 14 and 'Gandhiji Dakkhani Africa Mein' by Yusuf Nazim for Rs 3. A large volume on Gandhi by B R Nanda came for Rs 54. All those who feel there is a dearth of writings for children in Urdu should visit,'' he said.
It is 22 years since Sarvodaya Mandal has been offering this annual discount. "We allow buyers merely one copy of each book lest dealers take unfair advantage of our rebate,'' said veteran Gandhian TRK Somaiya who runs the mandal.
