Geeta Jain of the BJP was elected as the mayor with 48 votes on Friday. She defeated NCP's candidate and outgoing mayor Cathleen Pereira who got 41 votes. The mayor's post was reserved for woman from the general category.
Shiv Sena's Praveen Patil won the deputy mayor post with 48 votes. He defeated Congress's Hansukumar Pandey who got 41 votes. The outgoing deputy mayor Noorjahan Hussain is from the Congress. Two NCP corporators remained absent during the voting.
This is the first time the BJP-Sena has got its mayor and deputy mayor. So far, it was the Congress and the NCP who got the mayor post.
