Success rate in CA final exams increases steadily

MUMBAI: The pass rate in the chartered accountancy final exams has steadily risen in the last two editions. In the November 2014 exams, 8.23% candidates passed nationally, up from 7.29% in the March 2014 exams. In November 2013, the pass rate was just 3.11%. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) announced the November 2014 results on Monday.

Over 36,000 students appeared in the last exam. The highest scorer from Maharashtra is Santosh Nankani (22) of Nandurbar with 69.13%; his national rank is three. The rank is shared by Nikita Goel from Howrah. Vijender Aggarwal from Gurgaon topped with 69.75% and Pooja Pareek from Ahmedabad stood second with 69.50%.

JK Shah, from a CA coaching institute, said the results cannot get better. "This should be the ideal success rate of students who are clearing professional exams like CA. The quality of evaluation seems to have been be restored."

Nankani, from a business family, said, "I was very focused in my pursuit of chartered accountancy. So I did not seek admission in undergraduate programmes post HSC (he was a topper from his district in Class XII)."

He said, "Graduation is not compulsory for CA and therefore I never thought of enrolling for BCom or any other traditional course." His father and brother are distributors of food items. He enrolled in a coaching institute in Pune to prepare for his common proficiency test (CPT) and completed his articleship from a CA firm in Nandurbar. He relied on the institute's study material for his preparation for the final exams and cleared it in the first attempt.

Prafulla Chhajed, vice chairman, board of studies, ICAI, said, "Though we do not have a record on the numbers of students who do not have a formal degree, the possibility cannot be ruled out. Some students who are focused may choose to pursue CA after their class XII." Students usually complete the entrance test (CPT) and the intermediate exam (IPCC) and then the articleship before the finals.
