The crime branch, which had made the initial three arrests, had said on Wednesday that Rs 10 lakh was paid for the 17-year-old abducted boy's release. Those arrested Faiz Shaikh (19), Raibar Qureshi (19), Shahbaz Sheikh (19), Haris Khan (19) and Riyaz Khan (20). Hari, the brain behind the kidnapping drama, was the brain behind the crime.
City crime branch said the victim, a Class XII student of an international school in Powai, went on January 24 from his Goregaon residence to Agripada to meet his mother, who stays separately. On his way back he met his friends Haris and Riyaz. The victim was abducted after Riyaz and Haris left him.
"All the accused would frequently visit pubs and discotheques. We have recovered Rs six lakh from the dicky of a motor bike, used in the crime," said an officer from Agripada police station. All the five accused have been remanded in police custody till January 31.
"The victim had called up three of his friends for money for his release. While one paid Rs six lakh, the rest was arranged by his another friend. They are our witnesses and will be summoned for statements soon," the officer added. The boy was abducted at around 8.30 pm on January 24, and ransom was paid by 11.30 pm. He was released at 11.45 pm near Lilavati Hospital in Bandra.
