Lalbaug clash: Cops out to get source of rumour texts

MUMBAI: Five days after a clash broke out between two groups at Lalbaug last Sunday, the police have sought a probe to track down the origin of rumours that followed. Police commissioner Rakesh Maria has formed a special team to conduct a probe.

A case of rumour-mongering was registered on Thursday at Bhoiwada police station. Soon after Sunday's clash, bulk messages were forwarded on WhatsApp. Several fake videos, including one of ransacking of bikes of a particular community by another, were uploaded.

Officers from the cyber crime investigation cell have been roped in for the probe, said the sources. "It's a long process to track down the one who first uploaded this message but we will get the person and book him so that it serves as a deterrent ," said Maria.

Also, with the terror attack in Paris, the Mumbai police continue to block several posts on media sites.

"Over the last four days, we have blocked around 600 posts on various social networking sites. It's a continous effort. As we block one, another one is posted," said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Dhananjay Kulkarni.

On Friday, Muslim leaders, including MLA Waris Pathan, met Maria and praised him for handling the situation.
