MUMBAI: In a crime straight out of a film thriller, an employee of a security agency spiked the tea of his three colleagues on a cash van and scooted with Rs 2 crore after his accomplices waylaid the vehicle in Vile Parle on Friday.

Sadre Alam, employed only a month and half ago, was a cashier deployed along with an armed security guard, an ATM loader and a driver in a cash van used to top up ATM machines. The police have registered a robbery case, collected his details from the company and are looking for him.

On Friday, around noon, the crew loaded cash into the van from their office at Lower Parel and set off to stock up ATMs in the suburbs. Soon after driving out of the office, Alam suggested they have tea. The van stopped at a stall and he ordered tea. He then claimed an acquaintance was waiting nearby and he wanted to fetch some money from him. But before leaving he ensured the three got their tea. It is suspected he mixed something in the tea around that time.

When Alam returned, the driver started the van. Soon, the guard and loader fell unconscious, but the driver was unaffected. Near the Milan Subway flyover, three men in a Maruti Zen intercepted the van and assaulted the driver. Alam put the money from the cash box into a bag and sped off with the others.

The driver claims he followed the Zen till Jogeshwari, but lost track. He informed his office and approached the Vile Parle police. The driver said the accused had covered the Zen's number so he could not take it down. He added that he had tea with his two colleagues, but may not have felt the effects of the drugs as he had eaten chocolate immediately afterwards.

The driver complained of uneasiness in the evening and was admitted with the two others to a hospital. "They are conscious but unable to talk because of the impact of the drugs," said a source. The police have taken down a few details of the incident from the three and are inquiring about the driver's claims.

They have learned that Alam, married to a woman from Nepal, used to live with a relative in Kurla. After joining the security agency, he shifted residence. The cops are trying to trace his new address.
