40,000 people participate in Mumbai marathon

MUMBAI: Great cheer prevailed across the roads of south Mumbai as over 40,000 people took to the roads to run the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM). Crowds gathered in large numbers beginning from the first race which began at 5.40am on Sunday morning to cheer the participants. By noon, all races finished leaving the participants and the crowds with mixed feelings. While 3429 participated in the full marathon 12523 ran the half marathon.

This was the 12th year off the SCMM, which saw people across age groups run. A senior couple from Kandivali along with their son participated in the marathon. While Shashi Nijhawan and Vinod Nijhawan, both senior citizens participated in the senior citizens race which was 4.3kms, their son Lakshaya participated in the dream run. "The excitement in the crowds was amazing. It was a good experience and we have been participating in it for the last four years," said Vinod aged 70. Numerous disabled persons also participated in order to promote various causes in the Champions with Disability run of 2.4km.

Chetan Lodaya, a paraplegic from Paraplegic Foundation, said that they were trying to send out a message of how careful one should be while driving vehicles. "I meet with an accident while driving and hence have been bound to the wheelchair and hence want to spread the cause that people should be more vigilant while driving."

Meanwhile bollywood celebrities from John Abraham to Kalki Koechin were seen at the event. The chief minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadanvis attracted huge crowds who were all promoting various causes at the 6km Dream run.
