Schools move on from notice boards to portals

MUMBAI: Up to a few years ago, students and teachers would make a beeline for the school notice board for any announcement—be it results or the annual picnic spot. But technology has changed this practice. Schools now have their own intranet sites to interact with parents and students.

Several schools have recently signed up on a free portal called SchoolClan. A mutual sharing networking website, SchoolClan is a platform where students, parents and schools can source and share relevant and developmental information. "It also helps principals broadcast announcements to students, teachers, parents, ex-students and visitors. Teachers can use SchoolClan as a tool to share more in-depth information about the subjects they teach so that students gain a more holistic view of subjects," said Siddharth Mukherji, founder of SchoolClan.

Currently, 10 city schools such as Adarsh Vidyalaya, Chembur, St Xavier's High School, Fort, and Villa Theresa High School, Pedder Road, have signed up on the microsite.

Institutes run by the Podar group are logged on to Between Us, a portal created by the school. "Our portal allows the school to post event details, attendance and interaction between teachers, parents and students," said Vandana Lulla, director, Podar International School, Santacruz. The platform also allows teachers and parents to have one-to-one interactions about a student's progress and activity in school. "We recently wanted to understand from parents the kind of buses they would want. We posted it on the portal and in half an hour, almost all 2,000 parents replied," said Lulla.

Similarly, the Ryan group of schools is signed on to a portal called the Myclassboard. "About 60% of our institutions are using the portal currently. The schools post results of intra-school activities and everyday communication between class teachers and parents. With a user ID and password, students too can log on to it and interact with their peers and teachers," said Neti Srinivasan, chief operations officer, Ryan International Group of Institutions. The intranet also allows interaction between principals and teachers of all Ryan group schools.

Schools, which have yet not moved to the web, are communicating with parents using messaging applications like Whatsapp. "We have groups comprising members of the PTA and the principal. This is used for all real-time communication. There are also groups with just parents and teachers for everyday interactions," said Chitra Mehta, parent of a class IX student.
