Bijlani took 5hrs to travel 5km from home to jail

MUMBAI: Does a police vehicle take five hours to cover a distance of 35 km? If Navi Mumbai builder Suresh Bijlani is to be believed, he and his escort team, comprising five jail security staffers, took five hours to reach Thane jail from Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Reason given: They were stuck in a traffic jam for more than five hours.

According to a source, in October, a Thane court rejected Bijlani's bail but considered his application to visit his ailing father Chelaram for a few hours. Bijlani, who is accused of killing Navi Mumbai builder Sunil Lahoria last year, is currently lodged in Thane jail. In October, Bijlani, escorted by the jail staffers, was taken to his house in Vashi to see his father. As per the court's order, he was to return to the jail by 5pm, but he reached only by 10pm. Surprisingly, this delay went unreported by the jail authorities and came to light only after Bijlani filed another short-break application, stating that his father's condition was critical.

"Submission on behalf of the applicant/accused that he has not misused the liberty cannot be said to be sustainable or acceptable because from the reports of the police escorts received after his last visit to his father, after the visit time was over at 5pm, accused was reported to have resubmitted to the concerned jail at 10pm after five hours of delay and even unexplained in that respect is called from the concerned police," remarked V V Virkar, Thane judge, while rejecting Bijlani's second plea.

Bijlani's lawyer said that the accused was held up in traffic. "On one hand, it is unbelievable that for a period of five hours, there would be traffic jam and if at all it is so, it is risky and dangerous that the accused was held up in traffic for such a long hours," the court remarked.

A source said the jail authorities have initiated an inquiry into this episode. Interestingly, in October, the Supreme Court while rejecting his bail for 18th time had a put a gag on him from filing bail applications in any court in the country for the next four months. However, within a month, Bijlani filed a bail application in the Thane court, which was rejected.
