6 years on, man gets daughter’s gender fixed on birth certificate

MUMBAI: Akbar Sayyed, a tailor from Malwani in Malad, is a happy man. He has finally got his daughter's gender corrected in her birth certificate. Sayyed had been following up with the municipal corporation ever since her daughter Misbha's birth six years ago when her birth certificate mentioned her sex as male instead of female. This had become a major hurdle in the continuation of her education.

On Thursday, when Sayyed finally got his hands on the corrected birth certificate, he heaved a sigh of relief. "I received a call from the H east ward office, asking me to come and get the birth certificate procedures completed. I went on Thursday and it hardly took the officials any time to rectify the error. I am wondering what took them so long. Her school had been continuously asking me to submit the right birth certificate," said Sayyed.

Meanwhile Devendra Ambekar, Congress leader in the BMC whom Sayyed had approached with the problem, said the child's future could be at stake if the corrected birth certificate was not submitted at the earliest.
