THANE: The demand for candles, decorative diyas, mobile rangolis, torans and gift hampers always rise during the festive season. Thane's homemakers, many of whom indulge in making sweets, baking cakes and biscuits, crafting designer candles as an entrepreneurial activity and not just a hobby, say that the demand for their products sees a steep rise during the festive seasons.

Now that the festival of Diwali is just round the corner, Thane women are all busy giving the final touches to the items that they have made and that they plan to sell in a few days. Many of them are homemakers who began pursuing their hobbies and then later, turned them into little business ventures.

Making candles at home

Swati Shenoy, a resident of Vasant Vihar, has been making candles for the last two years. "After my children grew up, I had a lot of free time and so, took up candle-making. Over time, I learnt a lot and also, kept experimenting. Now, I have an array of designs." Till sometime back, Swati would only be making candles for her friends and family, but word-of-mouth appreciation of her work has got her orders. "This year, designer candles are in demand. There are some who want just the candles and some who have asked for an assortment of different kinds of small candles to be made into hampers," she says.

Designing candles

Arpita Lawankar, a student who has been making candles and will also be selling them to her classmates at a nominal price, says that she has not had any formal training in candle-making. "I buy candles and then melt them into different shaped moulds with wicks. My main creativity lies only in my decoration and presentation. I add glitter, colour, beads, faux flowers and other materials to make them unique. And these 'designer candles' are much sought after by my friends," she says.
During Diwali, when everyone is looking for personalised gifts, ones that are handmade and can be designed according to one's preferences are gaining popularity.

Easier to handle

The fact that candles are easier to handle is another reason for the rise in its demand. Pratap Patil, who has two teenaged kids, says that youngsters these days do not have time for the traditional diyas. A clay diya needs a proper water soak before it is ready for use, otherwise the oil gets soaked into the diya. The pouring of oil, then putting and lighting each wick, becomes tedious for restless youngsters. Pratap says, "My kids and their friends prefer candles to diyas because of the ease of use."

Personalized gifting options

The designer homemade candles are not just being used to decorate nooks and corners at homes, offices and even open areas like balconies, but they are popular as Diwali gifts, too.

Charmi Gala, a resident of Patlipada, says that she loves to gift candles. "I have a small business and I always give gifts to my clients during Diwali. Every year, I try to choose something unique and also make sure that I do not buy commercial products. Rather, I go for things that are made by homemakers or by NGOs, or special children. This year, I have ordered for gift hampers with different designer candles in them, apart from the usual toran and sweets."
