There is that typical hard-to-miss buzz around the city again, thanks to the festive season. Thaneites have been getting ready for Diwali festivities since the past week or so. The fact is that the rush and excitement is almost palpable, and that is what makes our city so vibrant. People are flocking to the traditional exhibitions - Gaondevi maidan, Central Maidan, Ghantali ground - other local markets and of course Thane's many malls, for their festive shopping. Here are a few points about the Diwali preparations here...
Giving your home a makeover
Festivals in our country are usually about traditional pujas, food, new clothes, new furniture, furnishings and sometimes even new homes. There are sales and discounts in all furniture and home furnishing shops that offer some of the latest option of decor. Of course, not everyone is decorating a new home, there are people who simply refurbish their houses during Diwali. A fresh coat of paint for the house, a single wall decorated with textured wallpaper, or just a change of curtains and cushions can mean a lot. Bright colours that spread cheer and spell festivity are in. Chandeliers and fancy lights are also very much in demand.
Homes get a thorough clean-up
Diwali seems incomplete without the 'Diwali-safai'. All homes get a thorough clean-up before the festival. Household helps along with almost all the members of the family participate in this process in some way or the other. There is dusting, sweeping, wiping and washing involved. It is believed that during the Laxmi Puja, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity enters homes only if they are spick and span.

And during Diwali, everyone prefers to shop for the traditional Diwali decor items only from street-side shops and makeshift stalls that are set up especially for this occasion. Every evening crowds surge through the streets picking up their favourite things.

Food and festivals go hand in hand and Diwali is incomplete without the traditional sweets and yummy faral. For many Thaneites, it is an eager wait for Diwali, just to get a chance to gorge on a variety of lip-smacking goodies. Maharashtrian households and others also, have already begun making faral at home - an integral part of celebrating Diwali. Besan and rava laddoos, chakli, chewda, shankar pali and karanji are some of the items that women make at home.
Firecrackers and the festival of lights
With the rise in the popularity of the 'silent Diwali' and the pollution-free festival of lights, Thane markets have seen a dip in the sales of loud firecrackers. Sparklers remain a favourite for most as many households traditionally believe that lighting one during the festive season wards off evils and is a good omen or 'shagun' for the beginning of the year. People are also opting for crackers that though expensive, do not create sound or air pollution.
Rangoli and diya shopping
Rangoli and diyas are an integral part of Diwali celebration. Though some Thaneites are opting for the ready-made rangolis, there are many who go for the traditional rice powder ones that are available in the markets everywhere these days. Intricately designed diyas in a variety of shapes and sizes still maintain their charm and are preffered over the electric lamps. The good-old earthen diyas look warm and welcoming at the doorstep of your home.
