Rains in retreat, brace for Oct heat

MUMBAI: The meteorological department has announced that the monsoon has started withdrawing from large parts of Maharashtra, including adjoining areas like Dahanu, but it may be a while before it retreats from the city.

The daytime temperature is likely to remain at a scorching 34 to 36 degrees Celsius in the days to come.

"Monsoon withdrawal has begun in Dahanu and Malegaon and several other parts of Maharashtra. For Mumbai, we have to wait for another 24 to 48 hours as Konkan had received rainfall in the last 24 hours," said KS Hosalikar, deputy director of India Meteorological Department (IMD). Criteria such as the absence of rainfall for five consecutive days, besides humidity and moisture levels, are taken into consideration to announce the withdrawal of monsoon. While the official monsoon withdrawal date is September 30, it has been getting extended by a week or two since the last few years. As for this year, uncertainty looms large even as the IMD on Sunday predicted thunderclouds in the city. Light showers along with thunderclouds are classic monsoon withdrawal signs around this time.

Hosalikar said that both humidity and temperature will be on the higher side adding to the discomfort of Mumbaikars in the coming days. The present weather is swinging between unbearable hot days and relatively cool evenings. On Sunday, both Colaba and Santa Cruz recorded a maximum of 33.3 and 33.8 degrees Celsius, while the minimum hovered around 26.5 and 24.2 degrees respectively.

"The discomfort will be there for a few days with high humidity levels. The temperatures are three to four degrees above normal. There is also no moisture in the air," Hosalikar added.

The contrast between afternoon and evening mercury levels has also given rise to a plethora of ailments such as respiratory infections and fever. City hospitals are flooded with cases of fever, sore throat, respiratory ailments, dengue and conjunctivitis. "We are treating up to 40 cases of conjunctivitis daily in our outpatient department. Cases have increased since the first week of September," said Dr T P Lahane, dean of JJ Hospital.
