Officials will discuss what pants the 60,000 civic students in classes V to VII should wear in schools. Students of classes VIII to X are given trousers.
The BMC distributes free of cost 27 school items like textbooks, notebooks, geometry box, uniform, raincoat, shoes-socks, tiffin box and school bag among others, to its students.
Corporator Dr Sayeeda Khan (NCP) from Kurla Teacher Nagar has moved a notice of motion before the committee, suggesting that the BMC supply full pants to all students above Class V.
"I noticed in my ward that civic students from classes V to VII don't like to wear half pants and wear their own full pants. In that case, the intention to supply uniforms free of cost is not being fulfilled and it is also proving to be waste of public money," said Khan.
Khan also proposed that instructions be given to contractor to stitch full pants with students' measurements.
The civic body has been supplying school items free of cost since 2007-08. It spends over Rs 90 crore per year to supply 27 school items to the 4.33 lakh students in all civic-run schools across Mumbai region. The contract has been allotted to a contractor for Rs 181 crore for last two consecutive years.
Vinod Shelar, chairman of the education committee, said a decision has not been taken yet. "The issue will be discussed."
