Sena has not fielded a candidate. Instead, it has declare support for Akhil Bharatiya Sena candidate Geeta Gawli, the daughter of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli. As for NCP, the nomination form of its candidate has been rejected by the Election Commission. MNS's candidate is Sanjay Naik while Majlise Ittihadul Muslimeen (MIM) has fielded Waris Pathan.
The Chavans are the main contestants in the same constituency after 15 years. During their last contest, in 1999, Congress's Chavan defeated BJP's. In 2004, Arun Gawli won the seat.
Shiv Sainiks are unhappy with the party as two Sainiks were interested in the ticket: former corporator Yashwant Jadhav and sitting corporator Ramakant Rahate. While Sena leaders are participating in Geeta's campaign, the average Sainik is maintaining distance. "What are we going to say voters? On what basis will we beg for votes? I prefer to stay away from the campaign," said Sainik B K Bobate (name changed).
Pundits say that though Congress's Chavan stands a good chance, a slight advantage will go to BJP if its candidate presents a believable agenda to help resolve the constituency's countless problems.
The main issues are long-pending repairs—forget redevelopment and reconstruction—of old and dilapidated buildings and chawls. In fact, many voters have shifted out of the constituency, awaiting repairs or reconstruction of their homes. The constituency, comprising some of the oldest parts of the city, also has an increasing rodent menace.
