Deportation case: Siraj gets pre-arrest bail

MUMBAI: The sessions court on Thursday granted Siraj Khan, who claims to be from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, interim anticipatory bail till October 14. The police are seeking to deport him for staying in India as a Pakistani national without valid documents.

Siraj's lawyer, Yousuf Khan, argued that he was not absconding and was willing to present himself as directed by the Bombay high court before the RAK Marg police station between 7am and 8am, during which he could be interrogated too. The court agreed. P S Tawde, the prosecutor opposed the plea and said that custody was essential. But Yousuf said custodial interrogation is not necessary.

Assistant police commissioner Vijay Bhagwe said they have registered an FIR against the activist who helped Siraj "go into hiding". (Inputs by V Narayan)
