Businessman impersonates Arun Jaitley’s son, arrested

MUMBAI: Impersonating a senior minister's son can prove beneficial. But it can also land you behind bars. A 27-year-old man, who allegedly introduced himself as the son of Union minister for finance and defence, Arun Jaitley, learnt it the hard way after he was arrested by the crime branch of the city police . The accused, Jayjeev Singh Chadha, is a city-based businessman.

He had dropped the minister's name, introducing himself as his son, Rohan Jaitley, to get favours for himself and friends. Chadha ran out of luck when he recently sought to enhance credit limit of a businessman friend to Rs 7 crore, said the police.

It was his yearning to feel like a VIP that spurred Chadha to resort to such name-dropping, said the police. Sometime ago, Chadha had met Rohan Jaitley at a function in Dubai. "So impressed was he with the attention Rohan Jaitley got, that he decided to play Rohan,"said a police officer.

Recently, Chadha offered to help his friend to get Rs 7 crore credit limit from a bank. He bought a SIM card and installed a caller-identification system, with his name as Rohan Jaitely. He then called up senior officials of the bank's in Mumbai and introduced himself as Rohan Jaitley, and sought an enhanced credit limit for his friend. With the name flashing at the other end, it made things simpler for Chadha. He told the official that his friend (actually, Chadha himself) would visit them for the job. Chadha and his businessman friend then met the bank officials with the request already made by 'Rohan Jaitley'.

His game was up when the bank officials, during cross-verification, learnt the truth and alerted the police. The property cell of the crime branch, led by senior inspector Nandkumar Gopale, picked up Chadha, who after sustained interrogation, revealed his game plan. He has also cheated casino owners in Goa to get VIP treatment. Chadha has been remanded in police custody.
