Said a BEST official, "A large number of garments, plastic moulding, electroplating small scale industrial units and other cottage industries in Dharavi are using electric supply from BEST undertaking. It has come to the notice of BEST Undertaking that some unscrupulous elements, indulge in theft of power and use direct Supply, bypassing the meter."
Recently, the cell raided Dharavi and nabbed 19 persons against whom the BEST has filed police complaints under section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003. Apart from registering cases, the BEST officials also imposed fines on the offenders.
Said a BEST official: "As per provisions of Electricity Act 2003, theft of electricity is a serious, cognizable and non-bailable offence. If convicted, the accused can be punished with rigorous imprisonment up to three years and/or penalty as decided by the Special Courts set up to deal with theft of electricity cases. On Diwali. the festival of lights, the BEST urges all its consumers to refrain from indulging in theft of electricity or unauthorised use of electricity."
