MUMBAI: Seema Pathare, a housewife, was smothered to death in her flat in a Borivli high-rise on Friday afternoon. Her body was found by her daughter on returning home from college. Police officials who were summoned to the crime scene soon after said robbery could have been the motive as some of the victim's ornaments were missing.

Pathare resided in a 11th-floor flat in Krishna Classic building with her husband, Jayprakash, a former accountant, and her daughter, Mansi, 19. This was Pathare's second marriage; Mansi was born to her from her previous marriage. It was Jayprakash's second marriage too.

On August 24, Jayprakash left for Malwani in Konkan for Ganeshotsav. "Pathare used to stay at home alone between 9.30am and 5pm while Mansi went to college. Around 4.45pm on Friday, when Mansi returned home she found that the door was locked from inside.

She then opened it with her set of keys. In the bedroom, she spotted her mother lying still on the bed and covered with a bedsheet. Blood was oozing from her nose and an injury was visible on the back of her head. As there was no sign of a struggle, the police are investigating if a person known to her was involved in the murder. The body has been sent for an autopsy.

"We suspect Pathare was smothered to death with a pillow. She was wearing an imitation mangalsutra while a gold mangalsutra was found on a table near the bed. But a gold bracelet and earrings were missing from her person. Her cupboard was also open. We are trying to ascertain if anything else was stolen from the house," said DCP Balsingh Rajput.

The police are likely to make inquiries with close relatives. "We are probing the case from various angles including the possibility of a family dispute. Mansi is severely traumatized and is in no condition to talk at length with investigators," an official said. The Pathare family had not employed any full-time servants—a maid used to come to clean their utensils. Neighbours said the family kept to themselves. They had shifted to the building a year-and-a-half ago and occupied the top floor. Inquiries are being made with security personnel in the society as well.

A case of murder and robbery has been registered and officials are inspecting CCTVs installed in the society.
