Tansa supply line crack

MUMBAI: The Tansa Main supply pipeline burst today morning near Tilaknagar. A three foot crack occurred during the water supply period around 6am.

Ramesh Bamble, chief hydraulic engineer, BMC confirmed the crack in the supply line. "Due to the crack in the line the water pressure has been reduced. Repair work has already begun," said Bamble.

The authorities despite having closed the valve immediately, the water flow continued for a while due to hydraulic pressure. The crack in the pipe line has happened next to platform no 1 near Tilaknagar railway station.

Recently, in August too the Tansa main had burst in Thane Vartak Nagar.

Since most pipelines are more than 100 years old, there are frequent bursts, affecting water supply to the city. The thickness of the pipelines, due to corrosion, cannot handle changes in water pressure.

Tansa lake can store up to 1,35,713 million litres and it shares 10.5% of the daily 3,750 million litres water distributed to the city.
