No political ads on BEST buses and stops, says Bombay high court

MUMBAI: There will be no politician's photo looking down from BEST buses to seek votes in the forthcoming assembly election.

The Bombay high court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking permission for political advertisements and messages on BEST buses and bus stops.

A division bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice P D Kode upheld rules issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) banning political advertisements on public buses. "It seems like a reasonable order," the judges said.

The petition had been filed by Rakesh Advertising. The company had bagged the rights for advertising on BEST buses till 2015.

BEST has around 3,800 regular buses, 286 AC buses and 122 double-deckers plying in the city, suburbs and even neighbouring Thane, Mira-Bhayander and Navi Mumbai.

"The ECI is a constitutional authority and has been given wide powers to frame rules in order to conduct elections in a fair and transparent manner," public prosecutor Sandeep Shinde, counsel for ECI, said. "In its communication to the state election commission in March 2014, the ECI had said that public property, like buses, should not be used for political purposes."
