Nalasopara scribe held for extorting money from builder

MUMBAI: The editor of a local newspaper in Nalasopara was arrested for allegedly extorting money from a builder.

Anil Bhuvad,a resident of Achole road in Nalasopara (east) allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakhs from a property developer Sudesh Kerkar. The Nalasopara police said that Bhuvad was threatening to publish newspaper articles against Kerkar's multi-storey building which he claimed was illegal. Police said that Bhuvad demanded cash to not publish the stories.

When Bhuvad approached Kerkar for the cash on Wednesday, the closed circuit television (CCTV) installed in the house captured the exchange of money. The police who had been alerted about the meeting caught him red handed. Bhuvad has been arrested under section 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code.
