High on the police's agenda is women's security. Anti-sexual harassment squads, in plainclothes, will make rounds of the visarjan spots on Monday, as the recently-trained female beat marshals patrol the streets on their motorcycles.
"Forty-six sensitive locations have been identified and will be monitored closely," said a senior police officer. "Ten per cent of police personnel, in civvies, will conduct anti-sabotage checks and keep an eye on anti-social elements. We are taking the help of 10,500 civilians; among them are NCC and NSS cadets apart from NGO workers."
The police are paying special attention to communal harmony and counterterror operations. Special measures have been put in place for Lalbaugcha Raja.
On Saturday, nakabandis were set up across the western suburbs, mainly to inspect two-wheeler riders, and action was taken against some anti-social elements. Using preventive arrest powers, the police detained 2,179 persons, nearly 700 of them "drug addicts" and five "drug peddlers". The anti-sexual harassment squads registered 16 cases and detained 573 persons.
