MUMBAI: Several government employees will have to surrender their official vehicles for election duty.

The RTO plans to arrange for 6,000 vehicles in Mumbai region, including hiring close to 2,000 taxis, for work before and during the polls. The vehicles will be used to transport election staff and polling booth officials and also to ferry ballot boxes. Among the vehicles will be delivery vans and wagons, officials said.

The election commission and the local district collector have been vested with the power to take any government vehicle for election duty and state officials will have to surrender their cars, with no questions asked.

While the collector has issued the orders, the implementing authority is the local RTO.
