The Governor selected Dr Salunkhe after interviewing all the candidates recommended to him by the search committee headed by Justice J N Patel, retired chief justice of the Calcutta high court for the post of vice-chancellor of YCMOU.
The appointment was necessitated following the demise of vice-chancellor of YCMOU Dr R Krishnakumar in January this year while still in office. Dr Arun Jamkar, vice-chancellor of the Maharashtra University of health sciences was holding additional charge.
Dr Salunkhe has been appointed as vice-chancellor for a term of five years with effect from the date he assumes the charge of office of the vice-chancellor or till he attains the age of sixty five years, whichever is earlier.
Dr Salunkhe holds M.Sc. and Ph.D in Chemistry from the Shivaji University, Kolhapur.
