Bholu Tiwari chased the two armed robbers on a bicycle, dodged a bullet and finally caught one of them with help from another passerby, Vilas Yadav (40). The police have decided to felicitate the two alert citizens.
Raghunath Sonawane (60) manages Shaheed Arun Chitte petrol pump which was allotted to his daughter after her husband police constable Arun Chitte, who was the driver of slain encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar, died in the 26/11 terror attacks. On November 26, 2008, Chitte was waiting at the Metro Cinema junction for Salaskar when he was hit by a bullet fired by Ajmal Kasab and Ismail Dera, who were fleeing in a police jeep after killing senior police officers Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Salaskar on Cama lane.
On Thursday morning, Sonawane was walking towards the petrol pump near his Dombivli home, when two men accosted him. Brandishing a chopper and a gun, they snatched Sonawane's bag, which contained Rs 5 lakh, and fled.
Tiwari, who witnessed the robbery, grabbed the bicycle of an unidentified man standing on the road and chased them. Noticing that they were being followed, Aslam Qureshi, one of the robbers, fired a bullet at Tiwari, but it missed him. Tiwari rode up to the robbers and threw the bicycle at Qureshi causing him to lose his balance and fall on the road.
Vilas Yadav, who witnessed the chase, helped Tiwari nab Qureshi, who was holding the bag containing cash. The other robber managed to escape.
Tiwari and Yadav later handed over Qureshi and his gun to the Manpada police.
Sanjay Jadhav, deputy commissioner of police, zone VII, said, "The accused has been booked for robbery and under the Arms Act. We appreciate the act of the two alert citizens and will felicitate them to encourage more people to come forward to help the police."
