HC issues contempt notice to top Maharashtra babu

MUMBAI: Bombay High Court on Tuesday issued a notice for contempt of court against principal secretary, State Home Department. Court was miffed that the government has not taken a decision as yet on recommendations made in three interim reports of Dharmadhikari Committee on safety of women.

A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Girish Kulkarni heard a clutch of public interest litigation which were filed following a woman's molestation on a train between Nerul and Juinagar in the early hours of June 9, 2011. At last hearing on July 30, 2014 the government was directed to file an affidavit stating steps taken on the Dharmadhikari report.

When the matter was called out, the government's advocate sought a day's adjournment. But the judges pointed our that on June 25, 2013 the government had given an undertaking that it will take a decision on the recommendations on or before August 31, 2013. They said " prima facie the State government has not complied" with it. They directed a notice to be issued to the principal secretary " calling upon him to show cause why action for contempt should not be taken against him." The matter is posted on August 29.
