For a ‘fair’ ride: Activists to list out dos and don’ts to help commuters

MUMBAI: Following the fare hike, the transport department has asked consumer activists to prepare a chart of 'Dos and Don'ts' to be publicized for the benefit of 1 million commuters using autos and taxis in the city. Members of NGO Mumbai Grahak Panchayat (MGP) have also been permitted to visit any of the 100 meter-repair shops across the city and check if the there were any irregularities in the resetting procedure.

The move has come about after TOI highlighted the plight of several commuters who were fleeced, some of them complaining of tampered meters. "We met acting transport commissioner Satish Sahasrabudhe who asked us to give a list of 'dos and don'ts' that can be publicized by the department. We are listing out some important messages for the benefit of commuters," said Varsha Raut, a member of of MGP.

She pointed out that many were confused about the fare hike. "Some contacted us last week, asking when they should begin paying the revised fares. We will put all information together that can be made into posters/hoardings, or posted on social media or government websites or be played as ads in newspapers. The transport department will decide," she said.

Fellow activist Shirish Deshpande said the RTO helplines and emails should not only be publicized but they must also function properly. "We plan to launch our own helpline so that we can receive complaints/feedback from commuters and forward them to the transport department. Our helpline will work in tandem with that of the transport department," he added. Commuter rights activist G R Vora demanded that all RTO helplines should be printed on an auto/taxi so that it's easily available to passengers. "The RTOs should study how e-meters can be tampered with and should plug the loopholes in the next three weeks," Vora added.

Even as meters are being reset to reflect revised rates, auto drivers complain that they will have to go without business during recalibration, which takes three days. Driver Dayaram Yadav, whose meter was being reset on Monday, said, "We cannot work unless our meters are revised and the process takes two-three days." Another driver, Vijay Yadav, said, "Although it's difficult to give an estimate, but we are likely to lose around Rs 400 in a single shift."
