‘E-meter recalibration in 45 days will be mammoth task’

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court may have ruled that commuters would not have to pay the revised rates till all auto and taxi meters are recalibrated but unions pointed out that the very task of changing the emeters within the short span would be a mammoth task.

E-meters in all the 1.08 lakh autos and nearly 50,000 taxis will have to be recalibrated in the next 45 days. "We have called a meeting with all meter repairers, unions and auto and taxi owners/drivers at Andheri RTO on Wednesday. We will seek their help to arrive at a methodical process so that recalibration can be sped up. Given the 45-day deadline, at least 2,000 autos and 1,000 taxis have to be changed daily," said MMRTA secretary P G Bhalerao.

Unions, however, said the process would not be easy. Taxi union leader A L Quadros also said Rs 3,000 was charged for the recalibration of every meter, and cabbies found the amount too steep. Moreover, there will be a mad rush for changing meters, given that there are only 24 authorized meter-repair shops in the western suburbs, 18 in the eastern suburbs and 50 in the island city. This might even give rise to a law-and-order problem as every vehicle driver would want his auto/taxi to be changed first, union members said. With so many vehicles queueing up at repair shops, unions fear that it might cause congestion on roads. "Also, as all the meters will not be recalibrated at the same time, our drivers may get into trouble. If a family books two autos, one with the old meter and another with new, they may not agree to pay the higher rate," said auto union leader Thampy Kurien.

RTOs will soon release the revised tariff cards. But sources said once an e-meter was recalibrated, drivers don't have to show the revised tariff cards. The exact fare will be displayed on an e-meter, along with the distance and the waiting charge (Rs 1 for 100m and will increase by Re 1 at certain intervals).

Regional transport officer K T Golani said taxis would be asked to get the e-meters recalibrated with proper seals.
