MUMBAI: There's some good news for students still seeking admission to undergraduate programmes of their choice. A recent government resolution has allowed all state universities to give permissions to colleges seeking a 10% increase in intake capacity across courses. This could push the total number of seats up by 13,000.

Seats in colleges affiliated to Mumbai University in the sought-after self-financed courses or even the traditional BCom may go up 10%.

Mumbai University registrar M A Khan said, "Colleges where courses are more in demand but the number of seats is less can seek a raise in intake capacity . Institutions which are willing to increase the ir capacity and have the infrastructure to do so will be given permission. The university has already received several proposals, which will be put before the authorities before sanctions are given." The overall intake capacity in colleges affiliated to Mumbai University might go up by 10% from the existing 1.3 lakh, following a latest government resolution. University registrar M A Khan said the 10% increase will be over and above sanctions for new divisions that may come from the state government this month.

Self-financed courses, which closed at higher percentages, might have more seats once permissions are given. Some colleges received over 4,000 applications for Pic for representation only 600-1,000 seats in BCom, others got 2,000 applications for 60-120 seats.

T A Shiware, chairman, Association of Non-Government Colleges, said they had earlier sought the state government's nod for a 10% blanket hike in seats. He said a few more seats in the traditional BCom course would help accommodate more in-house students, which several colleges are unable to do this year as overall Class XII results were very good.

While many colleges may opt for higher intake, others are unwilling to increase the burden on teachers. Sunil Mantri, principal, NM College, said each division in its traditional courses has more than 120 students. "Increasing numbers will make classrooms overcrowded," he said.
