Experts want CR, WR and MRVC under one corporation

MUMBAI: A thinktank working in association with the Mumbai Transport Forum has suggested that there should be an indepedent Mumbai corporation—which should include all rail and road transport bodies and also MRVC( Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd.)—to create a faster, safer and an ultra-modern public transport system for city residents.

While interacting with mediapersons, Sudheendra Kulkarni, a former member of advisory committee in railway ministry, said that there was an urgent need to bring several mass transport bodies, including Central and Western Railways —under one roof . "The independent corporation should plan, execute, operate trains and also modernize stations,'' he said. He suggested that the CR and WR workshops at Lower Parel (35 acres), Parel (47 acres) and Matunga (86 acres) should be relocated outside the city limits. "These areas can be commercially exploited to generate more revenue. We should also explore commercial exploitation of station areas with PPP (public private partnership) to create world-class stations in Mumbai,'' he stated.

He added that PPP and FDI will lead to holistic remodelling of city infrastructure.
