The sarpanch Shakuntala Patil (40) was on Saturday caught red-handed by the Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau for accepting five bearer cheques of Rs 2.50 lakhs. The cheques were given to Patil by a villager Vivek Yadav, to get house tax rebate on 50 rooms constructed in the village.
While Patil has been remanded to police custody till July 10, the police have arrested the deputy sarpanch after Patil named him. Patil is believed to have told investigators that the bearer cheques were accepted on behalf of all the 10 committee members of the gram panchayat.
