Dog in Mulund proves ‘Danger’ous to leopard

MUMBAI: A nine-year-old pet dog, Danger, ferociously fought off a leopard that pounced on him near Mulund Colony on Monday night. The fight left Danger with deep claw injuries on his face and neck.

"Around 10pm on Monday in front of Panchasheel Nagar Municipal Chawl, a leopard suddenly leapt out of the wilderness and tried to drag Danger away. Leopards often come there to hunt for dogs," said animal activist Pooja Bhandari.

But the dog, which belongs to a local, Aatish Sable, fiercely fought back and barked at the leopard instead of giving in to the bigger animal. "Scared by the crowd that gathered, the leopard fled back into the forest," said Bhandari, who is taking care of the dog. "Danger's face has swollen up as the leop ard has clawed him. He cannot open his eyes fully."

The residents said Danger was so named because ever since he was little, he would charge at other dogs even if they were twice his size. The "fierce battle" has spiralled Danger to fame, with him being dubbed as a "danger sign for leopards".

"It is rare for a dog to take on a leopard. The best part is Danger is an Indian breed, and not a fancy foreign pedigree," said activist Ganesh Nayak.
