Customs seize Rs 3cr at airport in one night

MUMBAI: In seven cases, Customs officials of Mumbai airport seized 11 kg of gold worth Rs 2.86 crore on Wednesday night. With these, the gold seized in the first few months of this financial year has crossed the amount seized during the entire previous financial year, said a Customs official.

The biggest seizure was from Mohammed Abdallah Abutouq who came from Bahrain. He had concealed seven gold bars weighing 1kg each and valued at a total Rs 1.8 crore, in a specially stitched belt.

In another case, a passenger identified as Faridaben Ali Asgar landed from Dubai and was found to carrying six crude gold bangles worth Rs 15.4 lakh. Three cut pieces of gold worth Rs 17.41 lakh and weighing 675 gm was recovered from Muhammed Abbas, a flyer from Hyderabad. In two similar cases, four cut pieces of gold was found on passenger Rajesh Udasi and one cut piece of gold on a passenger named Iran Mohammed, both of whom also arrived from Hyderabad on the same flight.

In the fifth case, four gold bars—each worth Rs 13.9 lakh—were recovered from Harcharm Singh, who arrived from Hong Kong via Delhi. Chaminda Ekanayake, a Sri Lankan passenger from Colombo, was caught with one 880gm gold rod valued at Rs 22.7 lakh.
