Central Railway shut down the slow track from Masjid Bunder to Sandhurst Road at 11pm on Saturday. The demolition began thereafter and was expected to be finished by 7am on Sunday but workers could finish only two-third of the job till 8 in the evening. By then, 106 services were cancelled to keep the tracks free.
Mhada's Mumbai repair board chief officer Ramesh Surwade said most of the demolition work was done, and it would be completed and the debris cleared by early Monday. He also assured that train services would run regularly by morning.
"Work was delayed because the building's retaining wall had a strong steel frame. Besides, as machines could not be manoeuvred, everything had to be done manually," he said. According to a source, the razing took time also because it is a pre-1940 building with lots of iron and steel. That required the use of gas-cutters, which slowed down the work.
The BMC indicated it would finish the work by midnight. A CR official said, "Only after they complete the work can our workers clear the tracks. We hope to finish everything by 4am so that services are operated normally."
