Teen lodges rape complaint against stepfather

MUMBAI: A 45-year-old plumber, attached to a Kandivali-based hospital, was arrested by the Aarey Colony police on Friday on charges of raping his teenage step-daughter. The 17-year-old victim came to the police station on her own to lodge a complaint when she realized that her mother was too scared to go against her father. The victim is a student and had recently passed her class X exams.

The victim resides at in Aarey Colony with her mother, step-father and a five-year-old step-sister. Last month, her mother went to her hometown in south India for 20 days, taking her step-sister along. During this period, the victim was alone at home with her step-father. Between May 26 and June 19, the girl was raped on two to three occasions by her step-father. On her mother's return, the victim narrated her ordeal. But her mother was financially dependent on her father and did not want him to go to prison. Her mother was also worried that lodging a complaint would bring disrepute to the family in society.

Aghast that her step-father was scot-free and fed up of harassment, the victim decided to act on her own. On Friday, she walked into the Aarey Colony police station in Goregaon East and lodged an FIR, showing a lot of courage. She underwent a medical examination, following which her step-father was arrested. He has been booked under section 376 of IPC and sent for a medical examination. Police officials said he does not have a past crime record.
