Security guard convicted for killing Mumbai-based lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha

NEW DELHI: Nearly two years after Mumbai lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha was brutally murdered inside her apartment, a Mumbai court on Monday convicted the security guard of the building.

Special judge Vrushali Joshi pronounced the verdict in the presence of a packed court room, which included Pallavi's parents Atanu and Sumita.

Speaking to TOI after the verdict, her parents said that they expected "nothing but the death sentence".

On August 9, 2012, Pallavi, a lawyer, was murdered in her rented flat in Wadala.

A security guard of the building Sajjad Ahmed Mughal alias Sajjad Pathan was held for the murder.

Pathan a native of Kashmir, was convicted under all charges including murder, outraging modesty of a woman and trespassing.

Judge Joshi adjourned the proceedings to Thursday when special public prosecutor Ujjawal Nikam and defence advocate Wahab Khan will present arguments on the quantum of sentence.

Watchman Sajjad Ahmed Mughal entered Pallavi Purkayastha's flat on August 9 with stolen keys and rape on his mind.

He tried to force himself on the lawyer while she was sleeping.

When Pallavi resisted with all her strength, the guard slashed her throat with a knife.

The 25-year-old daughter of senior Delhi-based bureaucrats died soon after.

Trial in the case had started in May last year.

Pallavi's live-in partner Avik Sengupta died later at Mahim's PD Hinduja hospital after suffering from inflammatory brain disorder.

Pallavi Purkayastha was murdered inside the apartment of Himalyan heights on 16th floor at Bhakti Park in Wadala on August 9 2012.
