MUMBAI: A census of the differently-abled people living in the Vasai-Virar region will soon be undertaken by the municipality. The standing committee of the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) on Tuesday approved a proposal to count the number of disabled and visually impaired people living in the region.
The VVMC, formed in July 2009, does not have statistics of the number of differently-abled persons in the region. A demand for the census was pending for over two years when the proposal was first made. The civic administration had then cited lack of staff to carry out the head counts.
The standing committee on Tuesday decided to assign the task to a private agency. The municipality will now invite bids for the disability census. Information about various disabilities, their income, education will be collected during the census. The population of the region is around 16 lakhs and there are around 3.94 lakh homes that needs to be visited to get information about the disabled persons. The municipality is expected to incur an expenditure of Rs 39.41 lakhs for the census. The census is expected to be completed within four months.
